The 3 Styles of Photography

Understanding Photography Categories

It's important to note that the typical photography you see in major brand advertisements or magazines are a happy blend of at least 2 of these 3 categories. However, when starting out, you'll typically be exposed to singular versions as local creative talent develop their eye and identity within these categories.

Commercial

This style of photography is focused on highlighting or selling a product. These images can have a range of emotions, but in early works you'll primary be asked for big/soft smiling portraits to promote these products. Use these styled shoots for practicing that happiness!

Lifestyle

This style of photography is focused on trying to sell a lifestyle. These images will ideally be taken in settings that make the most sense for that lifestyle. These may take additional planning and permits, but it will make all the difference in the end. Posing should feel natural and loose. As if captured candidly in the moment.

Editorial

This style of photography is focused on selling a story or used to highlight a subject that a story is being told about. These images are where creativity flourishes in our camera and pose work. This is where expressions will be most utilized as we'll be wanting to depict a sense of feeling or emotion to compliments our overall production. These images rely heavily on camera composition, lighting, Fashion, and post processing.
